Condition of the water supply system in the occupied Donbas

According to inkorr.com: The water supply system in the occupied areas of Donbas is in critical condition, even on the verge of default, according to Andriy Nikitin, vice president of the 'Ukrvodokanalgeologiya' association. He emphasizes that it is impossible to avoid a complete collapse in the long term. The main reason for this situation is the war: Russian troops are constantly shelling pumping stations and pipelines, destroying the water supply infrastructure.

Nikitin points out that the canals and reservoirs that fed the system have suffered serious damage, and water supply from Russia is insufficient. Investments in the Ukrainian water supply system in Donbas stopped back in Soviet times, and completely ceased with the onset of occupation.

“This is only partially sufficient, and I predict further degradation up to complete collapse. This winter will be telling: if they can more or less get through the heating season, the crash will be postponed. But in the long term, there are no chances,” Nikitin said.

In the cities of Donbas that are under occupation, local residents receive water for only a few hours a day or even per week. Water supply problems can lead to epidemics and humanitarian disasters. The instability of the infrastructure has caused a lack of water and unsanitary conditions in the region.

As a result of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the water supply system in these areas is on the brink of catastrophe, threatening a humanitarian crisis and epidemics due to serious problems with access to water.

The situation with water supply in occupied Donbas highlights the dire consequences of the war, which directly affects the lives of the civilian population. In conditions of water shortages and infrastructure destruction, it is important for the international community to pay attention to this humanitarian crisis and take action to address it.
