Former NATO Chief Warns of Potential Russian Attack on Alliance Within Four Years.
Warning of Russian Aggression
According to TSN.ua: Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Secretary General of NATO, has issued a stark warning that Russia could be prepared to launch an attack against a NATO member country within the next four years. He stressed the critical need for European nations to prepare for a potential conflict, stating that
“an attack could happen very quickly. Europe is not ready, and there are no guarantees of U.S. assistance.”This alert comes amidst heightened security concerns across the continent following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
According to intelligence assessments, the Kremlin may be capable of aggression before the end of this decade. In response to these threats, Norway is actively preparing for a scenario of potential Russian aggression. Significant changes are also underway in Poland, which plans to establish a high-readiness reserve of up to 500,000 troops by 2026. This will allow Poland to significantly bolster its defensive capabilities in the face of a threat.
NATO Nations' Preparations
Germany is also taking measures to strengthen its military power, allocating hundreds of millions of euros for modern armaments. A budget request for 536 million euros has been submitted to the Bundestag for the purchase of barrage ammunition. German generals emphasize that
“we are preparing society for possible mass casualties and sabotage. These are the realities of modern warfare.”
In the context of these preparations, Polish official Cezary Tomczyk noted that 'part of the reservists will undergo regular training. Participation in the program will be voluntary and paid.' Such steps underscore the seriousness of the situation and the readiness of NATO countries to respond to potential challenges from Russia.
Eirik Kristoffersen, a representative of the military command, stated: “It is still a realistic scenario to act to ensure the protection of Russia's nuclear capabilities.” These comments highlight the importance of coordinated action among NATO countries to ensure security in the region. The alliance's collective defense principle, Article 5, means an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
The situation in Europe remains tense, and the preparations of NATO countries for possible threats from Russia demonstrate a serious approach to ensuring collective security. Enhancing defensive capabilities and readiness for a rapid response to aggression could significantly alter the balance of power in the region. This also reflects a broader trend in the military strategy of European states, which seek to adapt to new security challenges arising from contemporary geopolitical tensions.
