The U.S. Congress certified Trump's victory in the presidential elections.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, was officially confirmed for another term as a result of the 2024 presidential elections. The certification ceremony took place four years after the Capitol was stormed by his supporters.
Vice President Kamala Harris led the joint session of Congress, where she was compelled to officially acknowledge her sample defeat. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was also present during the counting of the electoral votes.
Security measures around the Capitol were heightened, although the certification ceremony itself proceeded peacefully.
Trump has stated several times that he will consider the possibility of pardoning participants in the riots that occurred on January 6, 2021, the first day after his return to the White House. Many influential Republicans have supported Trump in his stance on reducing the scale of violence that day over the past four years since the events.
In response to Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, Congress passed legislation to reform the 1887 presidential election certification procedure. The 2022 Vote Counting Reform Act made the challenge process more difficult and clarified that the role of the vice president in counting votes is purely ceremonial.
It should be noted that the U.S. Congress conducted an investigation into the events surrounding the Capitol storming on January 6, 2021, when Trump's supporters attempted to hinder the certification of the election results. The investigation aimed to clarify Trump's role in inciting the protesters. In this context, the court opened a case against Trump without granting him presidential immunity, stating that he cannot avoid criminal prosecution due to his actions during his presidential term.
It is noteworthy that the U.S. authorities enhanced security around the Capitol to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents in the future. It is also important to note that political polarization in the country has reached a critical level, raising serious fears about the possibility of further destabilization.
