Cats should not be left alone for more than a day: veterinarians named the critical period.
According to ТСН: Although stereotypes suggest that cats are independent, in reality, they react sharply to changes in their usual routine. Veterinarians warn that a long absence of the owner can negatively affect not only the emotional state of the animal but also its physical health.
Psychological and physical state of cats
Veterinary behaviorist Mikkel Delgado emphasizes that adult cats can usually be left alone for a few hours or even one night if they are in a familiar and comfortable environment. However, the absence of the owner for more than a day, especially 48 hours, often leads to serious stress, which can cause anxiety and changes in behavior.
Recommendations for prolonged absence
The specialist notes that in unforeseen situations, such as an accidental flood or the cat’s illness, the animal will be left without help. Therefore, leaving a cat unattended for five days or more is categorically not recommended.
Rules for kittens
Kittens have even stricter restrictions. Until three months of age, they should not be left alone for more than 20 minutes. At 3-6 months, a few hours of independence is permissible, and approximately from eight months old — up to half a day. Only after a year, according to Delgado, can a cat spend a day without the owner.
Preparation for departure
Before leaving, even for a short time, owners are advised to take care of water, food, safe space, toys, and items with a familiar scent. However, the expert emphasizes that no preparation can replace live contact. The best option is daily visits from a familiar person or a professional pet sitter.
It is important to remember that routine actions can cause stress to animals and lead to serious health problems. Veterinarians also talk about common mistakes cat owners make that should be avoided to ensure the well-being of their pets.
