Poland Discovers Border Tunnels as Kremlin Escalates Hybrid Warfare Tactics.
Kremlin's Hybrid War and the Migration Crisis
According to TSN.ua: The Kremlin is using Belarusian territory to wage a hybrid war against the West, targeting NATO and facilitating illegal migration. In a significant tactical shift, Polish border guards uncovered at least four underground tunnels along the Belarusian frontier in 2025. This development is part of an ongoing migration crisis that began in 2021. One tunnel, located near the village of Narewka, measured 1.5 meters in height and approximately 60 meters in length, and was used to smuggle 180 migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan. This border region has become a flashpoint in a broader geopolitical struggle, with Poland and the Baltic states bearing the brunt of the pressure.
The migration crisis at the EU's borders has persisted since 2021. In a stark illustration of its scale, nearly 280 illegal crossing attempts from Belarus into Poland were recorded in just one three-day period from March 14 to 16, 2025. Over the previous year alone, Poland documented at least 30,000 such attempts. These figures point to a deliberate escalation of the problem, orchestrated by the Kremlin to destabilize its neighbors.
Military Drills and Security Threats
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the escalating situation poses a serious threat not only to Ukraine but also to the Belarusian people themselves.
"The focus of these exercises clearly demonstrates preparation for offensive actions against NATO countries" - Donald Tusk
During the joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises known as 'Zapad-2025,' troops rehearsed a scenario for an attack on Poland. Separately, on the night of February 2, Polish radars detected the entry of balloons from Belarusian airspace. Analysts suggest these incidents could be components of a Russian 'Phase Zero' operation, indicating a direct threat emanating from the Kremlin. In response to the heightened hybrid warfare tactics, Finland closed its borders with Russia. The situation along the Belarusian border remains tense, with potential for serious regional security consequences. These actions are seen as part of a coordinated strategy to test and stretch NATO's eastern defenses.
The growing tension on the Belarus-Poland border underscores not just the threats from the migration crisis, but also the Kremlin's military ambitions, which risk destabilizing the wider region. Preparations for potential offensive actions by Belarus and Russia have alarmed neighboring states, potentially leading to an increased NATO military presence in Eastern Europe. As the situation remains volatile, it is crucial for Western nations to maintain unity and readiness to respond to any new challenges.
