Russia Targets Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility Near Chornobyl

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces attacked the Central Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant overnight on June 7. The strike was carried out using a Shahed-type drone. According to the president, Moscow deliberately targeted this nuclear infrastructure site. Despite the seriousness of the assault, radiation levels as of the time of the statement remained within normal limits, with no exceedances recorded.

Broader Assault Campaign

This attack is part of a wider offensive in which Russia also struck civilian infrastructure across 13 Ukrainian regions. Over the past week, Russia has launched:

On the night of June 7 alone, 236 drones of various types were deployed across Ukrainian territory.

“The world must take real, new steps so that Russians feel what their terrorist war is like.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This incident underscores the ongoing threats to nuclear safety in Ukraine and the broader challenges the country faces amid the war.

The attack on a nuclear facility raises serious concerns not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe, as any potential nuclear accident could have catastrophic consequences. With hostilities continuing, the international community's response is critical—it must take action to ensure nuclear safety and stability in the region.
