According to Novyny.live: Law enforcement officers in Kyiv have detained and formally charged two organized crime figures for extorting $19,000 from a doctor. The arrests took place on February 17th. The suspects include a crime boss known by the alias 'Nose,' who hails from the Chernihiv region, and his accomplice, referred to as 'The Blind.' This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat organized crime groups that target professionals in Ukraine.
Prior Offenses and Seized Assets
These individuals were previously detained in January of last year alongside three other criminals while receiving a $3,000 payment. It is also known that they had earlier obtained $1,500 in several installments. According to the National Police, searches related to the case resulted in the seizure of substantial assets, including:
- $37,900
- 67,350 Ukrainian hryvnias
- An AK-style assault rifle
- Ammunition
- Two automobiles
- Communication devices
Based on new evidence of criminal activity uncovered during the pre-trial investigation, police have now formally charged the two crime bosses. A client who allegedly ordered the crime has also been charged, indicating a more complex extortion scheme. All circumstances of the case continue to be investigated as authorities work to establish the full details of the criminal enterprise.
This incident underscores persistent issues with organized crime in Ukraine, where criminal authorities continue to engage in extortion, threatening the safety of citizens.
The detention of these individuals, along with the seizure of significant cash and weapons, demonstrates active measures by law enforcement to combat these crimes. The ongoing investigation aims not only to punish the guilty but also to prevent similar offenses in the future.
