Putin's lackey goes wild: pro-Russian Fico blames Zelensky for all of Slovakia's woes.
Relations between Slovakia and Ukraine are under threat following sharp criticism from Slovak leadership regarding the halting of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed his outrage at the actions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a parliamentary committee meeting. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
'I am fed up with the president of Ukraine, who roams around Europe just begging and blackmailing, asking for money from others. This simply has to stop,' Fico emotionally stated during his speech, which was published on his Facebook page.
According to the Slovak Prime Minister, there were two options for continuing gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia, which had been previously agreed upon with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
The first involved supplying Azerbaijani gas to Slovakia through an agreement between Russia and Azerbaijan. The second option included the creation of a subsidiary of the Slovak gas operator SPP at the Russian-Ukrainian border to transport gas from the Russian Federation.
The situation escalated after Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also expressed his dissatisfaction and declined an official visit to Kyiv. 'If I need to go there just to take a photo, and I am told that no drop of oil or gas will go to Slovakia, then I really don't need to go there. Let no one take offense at me,' the Slovak president noted in a comment to the publication Aktuality.
It is worth noting that the parliamentary committee meeting was convened by the opposition, demanding explanations from Fico regarding his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Slovakia's further steps concerning the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
