New York Congressional Primary Results

According to Vox - Загальний: Tuesday’s New York congressional primary dealt a heavy blow to the artificial intelligence lobby, which failed to secure its objectives despite pouring substantial funds into the race. The AI advocacy group Leading the Future (LTF) had launched a super PAC with a $100 million war chest to back candidate Alex Boeres. Boeres, the original sponsor of the RAISE Act—legislation mandating safety protocols for AI developers—was defeated by Mike Lasher.

Vote Outcomes and Political Landscape

Although Lasher also co-sponsored the RAISE Act, he opposed lenient AI regulation. The final tally showed Boeres losing to Lasher by a margin of 4%. The AI lobby spent $11 million supporting Boeres, while crypto billionaire Chris Larsen contributed an additional $19 million to his campaign. Despite these efforts, the national political climate has shifted in favor of stricter AI oversight, with 80% of respondents in a Fox News poll endorsing tougher regulations.

Reacting to the outcome, Mike Lasher declared:

“I will not take your direction on matters of protecting our children, our jobs, and our families.”
Boeres’ loss thus signals not only a failure for the AI lobby but also a setback for its opponents. The country’s political mood has clearly evolved, and voter support for robust AI regulation remains strong.

This defeat for the AI lobby may reflect a broader shift in public attitudes toward technology and its societal impact. The strong backing for strict regulations indicates that voters prioritize safety and oversight, which could shape future legislative efforts and political campaigns in this domain. Given the active resistance from the electorate, the AI lobby will likely need to rethink its strategies to align with new public demands and expectations.
