Alexander Lukashenko’s Remarks

According to Espreso.tv: In an interview with Al Arabiya, Alexander Lukashenko addressed Vladimir Putin’s decision to withdraw Russian forces from the outskirts of Kyiv in the spring of 2022. According to Lukashenko, that move was made under pressure from international actors. He noted that attempts to negotiate a ceasefire proved futile, and the war has now entered its fifth year.

Lukashenko shared his view that at the outset of hostilities, “not only I, but the entire world believed the war would end in a swift Russian victory.” However, he claimed that

“certain politicians and forces asked Putin to stop, pull the troops back from Kyiv, and sign a peace agreement”
(Alexander Lukashenko). He firmly believes that if Russian forces had continued their advance, “neither Zelensky nor anyone else would have remained there.”

International Political Influence

Lukashenko also remarked that these politicians were deceptive, stating:

“Once again, apparently—I know—these forces deceived him”
(Alexander Lukashenko). Toward the end of the interview, Lukashenko apologized to Volodymyr Zelensky for his harsh remarks directed at the Ukrainian leader. This comment highlights the complexity of relations between the countries’ leaders amid the ongoing conflict.

Lukashenko’s statements underscore his attempts to shape perceptions of international politics and the internal situation in Ukraine. They also reflect the tensions between Russia and Western nations, which he claims influenced Putin’s decision. This situation continues to draw global attention, as the war in Ukraine carries significant implications for regional and international security and stability.
