Can Beijing Influence Moscow? China’s Push to End the War in Ukraine.
Beijing and Minsk Show Growing Interest in a Peaceful Resolution
According to UATV: China has signaled a clear desire to see an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine, with its UN Security Council representative urging a return to negotiations. This marks an increasingly active diplomatic stance from Beijing on the issue. Analysts believe China could play a pivotal role in pressuring Russia to move toward peace.
At the same time, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has also shown a vested interest in avoiding further escalation. Having recognized the potential threats to his own regime, he no longer supports prolonging the conflict. Lukashenko has handed over his country’s industrial park to Chinese companies, allowing them to use it as a hub for shipping goods into the European Union. This move underscores Belarus’s importance as a logistics and transit corridor—up to 90% of Chinese goods bound for Europe pass through its territory.
Expert Natalia Butyrskaya noted: 'Negotiations are the only way to end the war.'
She also stressed that the key question is whether China is ready to help bring the parties to the negotiating table. Lukashenko is leveraging Belarus’s role as a vital logistics hub for Chinese products as a bargaining chip to rally support in this context.
Intensified Efforts to Find a Path to Peace
In short, both China and Belarus are actively seeking ways to resolve the conflict peacefully, which could have major implications for regional stability. China’s involvement in the negotiation process could shift the war’s dynamics, given Beijing’s leverage over Moscow. Meanwhile, Lukashenko’s stance reflects his desire to maintain stability in Belarus, which may in turn influence how other regional players approach the conflict.
