Belarusians Navigate Darkened Streets as Lukashenko Orders Lights Off.
Lukashenko's Directive to Dim Street Lighting
According to TSN.ua: In a move to conserve electricity, Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, issued an order on February 4th to significantly reduce public street lighting across the nation. This policy has sparked frustration among residents of the capital, Minsk, who now face difficulties navigating darkened streets on their way home, particularly after 6:00 PM. The decision is part of a broader pattern of austerity measures in the country.
Lukashenko has argued that street lights are being switched on too late, only after the evening rush hour has passed. Citizens, however, have voiced strong discontent with the resulting conditions. One anonymous resident starkly described the scene: 'I drive through the city, and it's as dark as a forest.'
Official Statements and Public Backlash
Defending the measure, Lukashenko emphasized the critical need for energy savings, controversially suggesting that failure to do so could push the nation toward conflict.
"You practically want to lead the country to war," he stated, underlining the gravity of the situation as he sees it.
Meanwhile, Grigory Azaryonok, another public figure, offered a contrasting perspective on the new, dimmer urban environment:
"We don't have Las Vegas now, and that's both normal and good."
The reduction of illumination in Minsk has provoked significant public concern, with many residents worried about personal safety amid the drastically reduced visibility. The widespread irritation highlights how crucial urban comfort and security are to daily life. Lukashenko's alarming rhetoric linking an energy shortfall to the potential for war has further heightened public anxiety, forcing Belarusians to ponder the severity of the nation's current predicament.
