Ukraine Downs 107 Drones in Major Overnight Russian Assault, Amid Missile Shortage.
Ukrainian Defense Forces Respond to Overnight Attack
According to Novyny.live: In the early hours of February 20, Ukrainian air defense forces repelled a massive Russian air assault involving an 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile and 128 attack drones. This large-scale attack is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to target Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted or neutralized 107 of the hostile drones, demonstrating the effectiveness of their security measures.
During the attack, the ballistic missile struck 14 locations, and 21 attack drones managed to hit their targets. Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, announced the development of laser weaponry to bolster air defense systems, a move that could significantly enhance the country's ability to counter aerial threats.
Challenges Facing Ukrainian Defense
However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted a critical shortage of air defense missiles during the Munich Security Conference, underscoring a major vulnerability. The launch vectors for the aerial targets originated from several Russian and occupied locations:
- Bryansk
- Kursk
- Oryol
- Shatalovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region
The situation remains tense, but the air defense operation's results showcase Ukraine's determination and capability to defend its airspace.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges Ukrainian forces face amid Russia's continued aggression. The high interception rate of drones points to the gradual improvement of defensive technologies and response strategies. Yet, the acute shortage of air defense missiles emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced logistical support to sustain the country's defensive capabilities. It reaffirms the critical importance of continued international cooperation and assistance in strengthening Ukraine's military potential.
