Metzola called for increased investment in European defense due to the war in Ukraine.
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metzola emphasized the need for support for Ukraine from the European Union, as it is also important for ensuring security in Europe.
“We are in the third year of Russia's war against Ukraine. We must demonstrate unity and avoid any fatigue in our support. Poland is leading by example. I understand that the level of readiness must match the level of threats we face. I would like more member countries to reflect the determination and follow the example of your (Polish) presidency in the EU,” the European Parliament leader noted.
Metzola highlighted that Poland has a strong position in the EU to lead the union during this critical period. She also emphasized the significant challenges Europe faces, particularly from Russia, which threatens European borders and seeks to destabilize European democracies. In her view, these threats arise from European companies lagging behind competitors from the USA and China, as well as from new transatlantic realities.
“Defending Ukraine also means defending European security. But security cannot be ensured without investments in our own defense capabilities. Europe spends 1.9% of GDP on defense, while Russia invests 9%. We must direct our money where it is needed,” Metzola emphasized.
She called on member countries to demonstrate political will to strengthen cooperation in the defense sector, achieve interoperability, and avoid duplication of efforts. Metzola believes that strengthening the European industrial base and ensuring military mobility are key aspects of creating a stronger and more capable Defense Union in Europe as a complement to NATO.
“Security means less dependence on others, on sources of supply of raw materials, on ensuring energy supply and overcoming fragmentation. The single market is key to this. If we can better connect our energy market, we can lower prices, and this will allow us to remain competitive,” Metzola added.
