Merz: 90 billion euros from Russian assets could finance the Ukrainian army for another two years.
According to ТСН: The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, emphasized the importance of using frozen Russian state assets to further support Ukraine. According to him, the total amount could reach 90 billion euros, which would ensure stable funding for the Ukrainian army for a long time.
The essence of the problem
He noted that this money should become the foundation of European assistance to deprive the Kremlin of illusions about depleting Ukraine's resources.
"The critical issue is whether the European Union can make frozen Russian state assets suitable for the defense of Ukraine. We are talking about an amount of up to 90 billion euros, which, according to our estimates, will be enough to finance the Armed Forces of Ukraine for at least another two years," he stated.
Merz emphasized that this step is not a tool for escalation, but a path to peace.
"We are not doing this to prolong the war, but to end it and let Russia understand that the continuation of this war is futile," he added.
Hybrid aggression of Russia
He also pointed out that Russia has already transferred aggression to the territory of Europe, using various hybrid methods of influence.
"Russia is attacking us every day — through drone flights, assassinations, sabotage, espionage, cyberattacks, and targeted disinformation," he listed the threats.
Lessons of the past
Friedrich Merz drew parallels with the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014 and promised that modern Germany will not allow a repetition of the mistakes of the past.
"As long as I have a vote, we will not repeat the mistakes of 2014, allowing Ukraine to remain defenseless against Russia without security guarantees," he concluded.
In conclusion, the chancellor assessed Europe's chances of reaching an agreement on the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense as "50-50".
Earlier, he also sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's reaction to the proposal for a brief ceasefire during the Christmas holidays, calling this reaction brutal and cynical.
Friedrich Merz emphasizes the importance of actively using frozen Russian funds to support Ukraine in its struggle against aggression. His words highlight the necessity of united efforts by Europe to ensure stability and security in the region, as the continuation of the conflict could have serious consequences not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe.
