Great Britain and France promised troops for Ukraine: Germany took a different position

According to ТСН: Great Britain and France are ready to send their troops to support the peacekeeping operation in Ukraine, while Germany takes an ambiguous position.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that German troops will be deployed only on NATO territory near Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire and enhance defense capabilities.

“This may include, for example, the deployment of troops in neighboring NATO territories after the ceasefire,” he clarified.

While Merz intends to strengthen the Bundeswehr and create one of the most powerful armies in Europe, his decision reflects internal political constraints: any deployment of troops abroad requires approval from the Bundestag. Given the weak majority in parliament, the chancellor chose to take a more cautious position - deploying troops nearby, rather than inside Ukraine.

It was previously reported that Britain and France plan to limit their presence in Ukraine to 15,000 troops. This figure is significantly lower than previous expectations and will depend on the conclusion of a peace agreement.

According to preliminary estimates, fewer than 7,500 British soldiers will be deployed in Ukraine, which will be a challenge for a country with a regular army of 71,000 trained personnel.

Spain also expressed readiness. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said:

“We are ready to strengthen peace with the presence of Spanish armed forces. If we have done this in other parts of the world, why not do it in Europe?”

Turkey, which has the second-largest army in NATO, is ready to join the mission at sea. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that the Turkish fleet could take responsibility for security in the Black Sea.

The discussion about the possible deployment of international military contingents in Ukraine highlights the growing role of Western countries in supporting peacekeeping initiatives. At the same time, as Germany's position shows, the internal political situation can significantly influence decisions regarding armed forces. Cooperation among NATO countries concerning stability in the region is becoming more relevant than ever.
