Details of the tragedy

Court sources confirmed to the EFE news agency that some of the dead are being investigated as murder victims after survivors reported intentional executions.

A small group of passengers accused some fellow travelers of witchcraft, leading to them being shot and their bodies thrown into the Atlantic, according to unverified reports.

The police are searching for up to 30 men in migrant shelters in the Canary Islands as part of the investigation.

Some passengers died of dehydration or jumped overboard in a delirium.

Currently, it is unclear whether women and children are among the victims.

The police have not commented on these reports so far.

The journey, which turned into a real horror, began when the boat set off from Western Sahara to the Canary Islands.

At the time of departure, about 320 people were on the boat, but only 251 remained during the rescue operation by Spanish border guards.

The boat's engine is believed to have broken down shortly after departure, leading to a long stay under the burning sun with limited water supplies.

Reports indicate that some passengers were initially accused of stealing or robbing water reserves.

Over time, the allegations became more serious until accusations of witchcraft finally surfaced.

While some passengers died from natural causes, about 30 younger men are being investigated for conspiracy against some of their fellow travelers. The boat was discovered in disarray by a merchant ship on August 24.

Morocco, which, together with Spain, is responsible for these waters, stated that it lacks sufficient resources to cope with this emergency.

Spanish border guards rescued about 250 people from the stranded boat, which was located west of the city of Dakhla, 265 miles from the Canaries.

The survivors told rescuers that they had been at sea for about 11 days.

They confirmed that dozens of people died of dehydration, but some of them are said to have been victims of intentional executions.

The national police of Spain are working to identify all those involved in this crime.

It is believed that the alleged perpetrators have already spread out to migrant shelters in the Canary Islands.

Some of the suspects in the murder case have already been identified and could be arrested soon.

If found guilty, the men face life imprisonment.

The route of migrants from Africa to the archipelago takes place via the so-called 'Western route', known for its danger.
