Donetsk's Future Takes Center Stage in Abu Dhabi Peace Negotiations

According to TSN.ua: Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are set to meet in Abu Dhabi for peace consultations mediated by the administration of Donald Trump. The primary topic of discussion will be the future of the Donetsk region, control of which holds significant strategic importance. The status of Donetsk has become a pivotal issue in the peace process, drawing considerable attention from the international community. These talks represent a critical diplomatic effort to resolve a conflict that has destabilized Eastern Europe for years.

Scheduled for the end of this week, the negotiations will center on Russia's demand for the transfer of approximately 2,082 square miles of territory in Donetsk Oblast. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the Donetsk issue is the sole unresolved point in the peace talks, underscoring its importance for achieving regional stability. The Ukrainian-controlled portion of Donetsk is smaller than the state of Delaware, highlighting the intensity of the dispute over this relatively compact area.

Russia already controls Luhansk Oblast, and in late 2022, the Kremlin announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. The city of Sloviansk, where a pro-Russian separatist uprising began in 2014, remains a potent symbol within the context of this prolonged conflict.

Resolving Water Supply Issues as a Key Priority

In 2022, Russia occupied 245 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, a move that further emphasized the urgency of resolving water supply issues. As Vladimir Putin noted, the water supply problem can only be fundamentally addressed after control over this territory is established. The key water supply channel for the region, the Siverskyi Donets—Donbas canal, also plays a crucial role in the broader context of the peace negotiations.

Expert Oleksandr Gabuev expressed the view that achieving at the negotiating table what could not be won by force would answer the question of who won the war. Consequently, the outcome of the Abu Dhabi talks could substantially influence future developments in Donetsk Oblast and the wider region. The fate of this long-disputed region could determine not only the political landscape but also the socio-economic development of Eastern Ukraine.

The Abu Dhabi negotiations open a new opportunity to resolve a conflict that has lasted for several years and could prove pivotal for stabilizing the situation in Ukraine. The results may have far-reaching consequences for Ukraine-Russia relations and for international politics as a whole.
