Parents in Ukraine Face Fines Up to 5,100 UAH as School Attendance Rules Tighten.
Tougher Oversight in Schools
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science is rolling out stricter measures to monitor school attendance, partnering with the juvenile police to enforce the new rules. Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi emphasized that documenting violations of children’s right to education is a top priority. Under the updated approach, parents could be held accountable for their children’s truancy, with fines reaching up to 5,100 hryvnias (approximately $140 USD).
'We are recording violations of a child’s right to education, and then working with the juvenile police to investigate the reasons behind those violations.' Oksen Lisovyi, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine
The initiative aims to boost parental responsibility for their children’s schooling. This push comes as Ukraine has built over 200 underground schools in frontline regions to ensure safe learning environments amid ongoing conflict. These facilities highlight the government’s commitment to keeping education accessible even in dangerous areas, making regular attendance all the more critical.
State Focus on Education
The introduction of these attendance controls reflects a broader state effort to prioritize education in Ukraine, especially during wartime. By holding parents more accountable, the government hopes to improve access to learning for all children—a key factor for both personal development and national social progress. Alongside these measures, the creation of secure underground schools demonstrates a determination to maintain continuity in education, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
