Education Minister Opposes Removing Math from Ukraine's National Test: What's Next for Applicants.
Math to Stay in Ukraine's National Multi-Subject Test
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, has pushed back against proposals to drop mathematics as a compulsory component of the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT). He stressed that fundamental skills are essential for university applicants, stating that the exam
“presupposes basic knowledge in areas such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.”This stance comes amid ongoing debates in the Verkhovna Rada about the format of the 2027 admissions campaign, with some lawmakers calling for changes to the testing rules. Lisovyi argues that a solid grasp of math is critical for students to succeed in higher education.
Stricter Attendance Monitoring and Broader Education Reforms
Beyond the test debate, the Ministry of Education and Science plans to tighten oversight of school attendance, signaling a broader push to raise educational quality across the country. Lisovyi has also confirmed he has no intention of stepping down from his post, indicating his commitment to driving ongoing reforms in the sector. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of Ukrainian history in the curriculum, reflecting a comprehensive approach to shaping academic programs. These initiatives highlight the challenges facing Ukraine's education system and the ministry's efforts to find effective solutions for maintaining high standards. As the learning environment continues to evolve, striking a balance between modern knowledge demands and core subjects like mathematics remains a key priority—one that could shape the training of future professionals and the overall quality of higher education in Ukraine.
