Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Dismisses Russian Claims on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant as Another Disinformation Campaign.
Statement from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to allegations from the Russian Federation concerning attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), characterizing them as part of a coordinated disinformation effort and deliberate manipulation. The plant, which remains under illegal Russian occupation, has once again become the target of accusations from Moscow. Russia claimed that Ukraine deliberately struck equipment at the facility.
The Ministry noted that Russia typically escalates its information warfare tactics ahead of each meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. This latest provocation comes just before the June session, where member states are set to review the Agency’s 2025 Annual Report and the Director General’s report on safeguards implementation.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry emphasized: 'We view these allegations as yet another information operation by the occupying state, designed to divert the international community’s attention.'
Furthermore, Ukraine has called on all 34 members of the IAEA Board of Governors to deliver a principled response to Russia’s actions—not only through statements but also in formal decisions. This situation underscores the growing complexity and tension surrounding the safety of nuclear facilities amid an ongoing conflict.
Nuclear Safety in a Conflict Zone
Russia’s accusations regarding attacks on the Zaporizhzhia plant reflect not only the broader information battle between the two countries but also raise serious safety concerns about nuclear sites located in active war zones. Ukraine’s response highlights the critical need for international oversight of nuclear security, which could become even more vital if tensions escalate further.
It is essential that the global community remains vigilant and responds to potential threats to nuclear safety in the region.
