A Remarkable Birth at the 'XII Months' Park

According to Novyny.live: A rare black Far Eastern leopard cub, named Hera, has been born at the 'XII Months' Park in the Kyiv region. This event is significant because fewer than 100 individuals of this subspecies (Panthera pardus orientalis) remain in the wild. Hera, born on August 20, 2025, is especially notable because melanism is highly unusual for Far Eastern leopards.

Why Hera’s Birth Matters

While melanism occurs naturally among leopards, it is exceptionally rare in the Far Eastern subspecies. The last documented case of melanism in leopards was recorded in 2019 in the United States. 'The birth of a black Far Eastern leopard cub is an extremely rare event by global standards. This mutation is almost unheard of for this subspecies. For us, Hera’s arrival is a special milestone, especially since this pair had not produced offspring for a long time,' said Mykhailo Pinchuk.

Hera is the offspring of leopards Salma and Hercules, who reside at the 'XII Months' Park in the village of Demydiv, Kyiv region. Spanning 16 hectares, the park is home to over 200 animals representing nearly 100 species. The birth of Hera, a black Far Eastern leopard cub, highlights the critical importance of conserving this rare species and preserving its genetic diversity. This unique black leopard cub can now be seen in the Kyiv region, drawing attention not only from local residents but also from visitors across other areas.

Hera’s birth marks a pivotal moment for the conservation of endangered species, as the Far Eastern leopard faces the threat of extinction. Such occurrences are recognized as vital for biodiversity preservation and underscore the role of zoos and protected areas in breeding rare species. It also has the potential to raise public awareness about the challenges of protecting wild animals and their natural habitats.
