Language Law Violation at a Ukrainian School

According to Espreso.tv: A schoolteacher in Ukraine has been fined after an inspection found she violated the country’s language law during a lesson. The breach of Article 21 of the law on language was identified during a state oversight visit conducted by Ihor Spiridonov, a representative of the Language Ombudsman. The investigation was launched following a complaint from the father of a first-grade student, who is a veteran of the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The educator admitted to using the language of the aggressor state in the classroom. The Language Ombudsman issued a fine, which the teacher paid on the same day. Under Article 21 of Ukraine’s Law 'On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language,' all educational activities must be conducted exclusively in the state language.

Why Language Compliance Matters

Ihor Spiridonov emphasized that

“using the language of the aggressor state, especially in education, is a serious and unacceptable violation of the law.”

“first-graders should not have to defend their language rights from adults.”

In the first half of 2026, the Office of the Language Ombudsman received 1,500 complaints and appeals about language law violations, 34% of which were recorded in Kyiv.
