Ukrainian courts are increasingly postponing the examination of criminal proceedings if the accused is drafted into the army. Only in the Odessa region this year, such cases have been recorded 401 times. This means that the cases are suspended indefinitely.

This data was published by the 'Opendatabot' company, which provides access to state data from the main public registers to citizens and businesses.

Suspension of cases due to mobilization

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, more than 7,300 criminal cases have already been suspended due to the mobilization of the accused. These data are provided by the court registry search engine 'Babushka'. Only this year, almost 1,900 proceedings have been suspended - practically as many as in the entire 2023.

Leaders in the number of suspended cases

The highest number of suspensions has been recorded in Kyiv region - 617 cases. There is also a high rate in Lviv region (582 cases) and Dnipropetrovsk region (559). In Odessa region, 401 cases have been suspended, which will also lead to delays in hearings.

Experts explain that the suspension of proceedings does not mean automatic release from responsibility, but in such cases, the timelines for consideration become indefinite.
