According to TSN.ua: The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is recruiting for positions on Skomer Island, seeking three long-term volunteers and a specialist to monitor seabirds, particularly puffins. Located one mile off the Pembrokeshire coast, Skomer is a renowned nature reserve. This is a unique opportunity to live and work in a pristine coastal environment dedicated to conservation.

Puffins, also known as Atlantic puffins, are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, making the monitoring work on Skomer critically important. The island's popularity is evident, attracting up to 25,000 visitors annually. Last year's survey recorded 43,626 puffins on Skomer, highlighting the site's significance as a breeding colony and the ongoing need for its protection.

Program Details and Logistics

The Trust will cover accommodation and transport costs within the UK for successful applicants. Volunteers will receive a stipend ranging from £200 to £400. The work season runs from late March through the end of September. It's important to note that Skomer has no permanent residents, only seasonal staff who live on the island for roughly nine months each year. Access to the reserve is by boat only, adding to the remote and immersive nature of this conservation role.
