First African Nationals Identified Among Russian War Casualties in Ukraine.
Rising Toll of Foreign Fighters
According to UATV: Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) has confirmed the deaths of two Nigerian citizens fighting for Russia in its war against Ukraine. The men, Hamzat Kazim Kalavole and Mbaha Stephen Udoka, were killed in late November during an attempted assault on Ukrainian positions in the Luhansk region. Kalavole had signed a contract with the Russian military on August 29, 2025, while Udoka enlisted later, on September 28, 2025. This marks the first confirmed cases of African nationals dying while serving in Russian forces, highlighting the international dimension of the conflict.
According to the GUR, both men were eliminated by a drone strike without engaging in direct infantry combat. This follows the earlier identification of another foreign casualty, Clinton Nyapara Mogesi, a Kenyan citizen who died in the Donetsk region. These incidents point to a growing presence of foreign nationals within Russian ranks, recruited to fight in a war that has now drawn participants from beyond Europe.
Ukrainian Intelligence Issues Warning
The GUR has issued a stark warning to foreign citizens against traveling to Russia or undertaking any work within the aggressor state. The agency emphasized that Udoka had received virtually no military training, underscoring the extreme risks faced by foreigners who join Russian forces. The Russian military has been actively recruiting abroad, often targeting economically vulnerable regions with promises of financial reward.
The increasing number of foreign fatalities on the Russian side demonstrates how the war in Ukraine is attracting international participants, a trend that extends the conflict's human cost far beyond the region. This involvement is perilous for the individuals concerned and carries serious consequences for their safety and lives.
