Sheinbaum replied to Trump about a possible U.S. invasion of Mexico: Sovereignty is not up for discussion.
According to ТСН: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum commented on Donald Trump's threats of a possible U.S. attack on Mexico after Venezuela.
Sheinbaum emphasized:
“We categorically reject interference in the internal affairs of other countries”, reiterating her words spoken after the U.S. military attack on Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
She noted that Mexico is a sovereign state and confirmed that the country cooperates with the U.S. in the fight against drug trafficking and security, stressing the inadmissibility of military actions in Mexico against drug cartels.
“It is important to remind that in Mexico the people rule, and that we are a free and sovereign country — cooperation — yes, subordination and intervention — no,” she emphasized.
Position on possible U.S. intervention
In response to journalists' questions, Sheinbaum commented on the likelihood of U.S. intervention in Mexico's affairs, stating:
“I do not believe in an invasion, I do not even think they take this very seriously”. She added that during phone calls, Trump repeatedly requested permission for U.S. troops to enter Mexico.
“We firmly said 'no.' First, because we protect our sovereignty, and second, because there is no need for it,” said the Mexican leader.
Sheinbaum also expressed her readiness to cooperate in the fight against illegal drug trafficking on U.S. territory. She opposed U.S. intervention in Venezuela's affairs, stating that
“the American continent belongs to its people, not to some superpower”.
Additionally, Trump hinted at a possible intervention in Mexico, asserting that drug cartels dominate there, and that
“something will have to be done”. He also indicated that Colombia could be the next target after Venezuela.
Trump again expressed the opinion that the States 'really need' Greenland.
The origins of these statements indicate a tense situation between the U.S. and Mexico. Sheinbaum's position seeks to strengthen the country's sovereignty in the face of potential threats. This also raises an important topic regarding the relations between neighboring states in the context of security and the fight against drugs, which remain relevant for both countries.
