The Russian Threat

According to UATV: On June 12, 2023, during a broadcast on the FREEДОМ television channel, Ihor Petrenko highlighted that Russia is actively preparing a range of actions targeting NATO member states through military, informational, and political means. He pointed out that the Alliance's primary weakness lies in its sluggish response to emerging threats from the Russian Federation. This analysis comes amid heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, where security concerns have escalated since 2014.

Petrenko noted that events surrounding Ukraine, beginning in 2014, demonstrated how the Kremlin employs disinformation and backs separatist groups. According to him, Russia is investing substantial resources to carry out these operations.

„The Kremlin is only ramping up its forces, and the harder you hit back, the easier it will become“ — Ihor Petrenko

He further emphasized that hybrid warfare is now a tangible reality for Western nations. Ihor Petrenko remarked that “the biggest problem arises when there is no ready-made solution.” He stressed that the systemic threat posed by Russia will persist even after the war in Ukraine concludes. “When the 'little green men' appeared, the Ukrainian government was in chaos,” Petrenko added, pointing to the instability that complicates an effective response to these challenges.

NATO's Need to Act

These comments underscore the severity of the issue and the urgent need for NATO to deliver a swift and coordinated response to the challenges stemming from Russian actions.

With rising tensions between Russia and NATO countries, it is critical for the Alliance not only to implement reactive measures but also to craft strategies that prevent future threats. Drawing on past events, including the annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, lessons must be applied to effectively counter disinformation and hybrid attacks. This will be a vital step toward ensuring regional stability and security.
