NATO Chief Declares Russia the Primary Adversary, Calls for Immediate Weapons for Ukraine.
Mark Rutte's Address at the World Economic Forum
According to TSN.ua: Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, 2023, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that Russia remains the Alliance's principal adversary. He underscored that Ukrainian forces are currently defending their nation against Russian aggression. Rutte also highlighted the critical state of weapons supplies to Ukraine, stressing the urgent need for military support. This speech comes at a time of heightened global concern over the war's impact on European security and the international order.
The Urgent Need for Military Support to Ukraine
Rutte specifically noted that Ukraine needs weapons 'yesterday.' He emphasized that in a context where Russia is suffering significant losses—approximately one thousand soldiers killed per day in December 2022—it is crucial to provide the Ukrainian army with necessary resources. Overall, Russian losses in December exceeded 30,000 soldiers for the month, indicating a high intensity of combat operations.
Regarding peace negotiations, Rutte expressed hope they would conclude soon, though he cautioned that
"it will not happen tomorrow"— Mark Rutte. He noted that the implementation of decisions on supporting Ukraine might be delayed until summer, around April-May. In Kyiv, where the temperature at the time of his speech was -20 degrees Celsius, the situation on the front remains tense, and the need for armaments is becoming increasingly urgent. The severe winter conditions further complicate the military and humanitarian situation on the ground.
Mark Rutte's address underscores the continuing tension in the region and the importance of international community support for Ukraine. Given the high Russian losses highlighted by Rutte, the frontline situation remains critical, demanding immediate action to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. The continuation of military deliveries and support from NATO could be decisive for regional stability and the future course of the conflict.
