Ukrainian Researchers Earn Between $370 and $990 Monthly, Statistics Reveal.
What Scientists Earn in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Scientific researchers in Ukraine face persistently low salaries, a key factor undermining their motivation to remain in the field. According to Ella Libanova, Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a scientist's income varies dramatically based on whether they lead major projects. A professor or doctor of sciences with significant projects can earn approximately 40,000 hryvnias monthly. In stark contrast, those without such projects may receive only 15,000 to 20,000 hryvnias. This salary disparity highlights a system struggling to retain talent, especially as the country seeks to rebuild and modernize.
'But if there are no serious projects, then it's just 15,000 to 20,000 hryvnias.' Ella Libanova
Additional Key Figures
Projected minimum salaries for 2026 indicate little relief. A department head (professor) can expect a base pay ranging from 17,683 to 18,703 hryvnias. Other academic staff also face low earnings:
- Associate professors earn 16,614 hryvnias,
- Senior lecturers receive 14,574 hryvnias,
- Junior lecturers or trainees make only 12,533 hryvnias.
These figures underscore the severe financial challenges confronting Ukraine's scientific community, raising concerns about the sector's future capacity and sustainability.
The issue of low pay reflects the broader state of Ukrainian science, which is in urgent need of reform and increased investment. Retaining qualified personnel is critical for fostering innovation and technological development, which are essential drivers of long-term economic progress. Competitive salaries could serve as a vital incentive to attract young talent to scientific careers and support the realization of new, impactful research projects.
