Invisible Threats: EU Prepares New Sanctions Regime Against Russia.
The European Union is preparing to introduce new sanctions aimed against Russia's hybrid threats.
Radio Free Europe's journalist Rikard Jozwiak reported this on the social network X (Twitter).
Jozwiak stated that EU member state ambassadors plan to agree on these new sanctions on October 2, with their official approval expected next week. It is worth noting that initially a broader sanctions regime was discussed, but it was decided to focus on threats from Russia.
Importantly, at this moment, specific individuals and organizations to be targeted by the new restrictions are not named. However, they will be added to the sanctions lists in the future.
These new sanctions are a continuation of a series of restrictive measures that the EU has been implementing against Russia since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. The EU has already adopted 14 sanctions packages covering various sectors: financial sector, energy, transport, and visa policy.
The latest, 14th sanctions package, introduced in June 2024, included sanctions against 116 individuals and legal entities accused of actions against Ukraine. Energy sector restrictions were also tightened: a ban on the transportation of Russian natural gas within the EU territory. Restrictions on financial transactions were also expanded, including a ban on the participation of EU organizations in the Russian financial messaging system.
