The inability to stop conflicts in the Middle East highlights the limitations of the UN — WSJ.

At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, world leaders are gathering this week to discuss the situation in Gaza. However, efforts aimed at punishing Israel and combating 'Hezbollah' have so far yielded no significant results.

All year, the UN has tried to stop the war in Gaza through condemnations, resolutions, and court cases. However, Israel continues its strategy of ignoring. The deputy head of The Wall Street Journal's Middle East and North Africa bureau, Shaindy Reiss, points to the limited tools at the UN's disposal.

Even when countries vote for resolutions against Israel, it has no serious consequences for it, neither diplomatic nor economic. Arab countries, particularly Jordan, which has allowed its airspace to be used to shoot down missiles from Iran, are the most vehement critics of Israel at the UN.

UN expert at the International Crisis Group, Richard Gowan, states that many countries criticize Israel in their speeches at the UN but take no action to punish it. Palestinian human rights advocate Diana Buttu added that many countries are afraid to act against Israel because they want to stay on the side of the US.
