Nicaragua Recognized Occupied Territories as Russian - Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responded.
Ukraine has reacted decisively to the statement by the President of Nicaragua regarding possible support for Russian claims to temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. Kyiv considers these intentions unacceptable and urges the Nicaraguan side to retract its words, warning of possible consequences in case of further support for the aggressor.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responded to Nicaragua's Recognition of Occupied Territories as Russian
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that if this information is confirmed, Kyiv will regard Nicaragua's actions as a gross violation of international law and its international obligations. Ukraine reserves the right to respond in case of hostile actions on the part of this country.
The foreign office emphasized that any attempts to recognize the Russian occupation of parts of Ukrainian territory contradict international law, particularly the UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 'Definition of Aggression' and the ES-11/4 resolution of October 12, 2022. These documents clearly state that the international community must not recognize any change in the status of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.
The Ministry also reminded that the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, as well as the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions were and remain inseparable parts of Ukraine. Any 'referendums', 'consultations', or statements of the occupying authorities, as well as their 'recognition' by third countries, are legally void and have no legal consequences.
The ministry also noted that Nicaragua had previously violated international law by opening a so-called 'honorary consulate' in occupied Simferopol in 2020, for which it fell under sectoral sanctions.
Currently, the Ministry emphasized, Nicaragua has a choice: either immediately refute the reports of recognizing occupied territories, if they are not true, or be prepared for serious consequences.
'The absence of such a denial in the near future will be regarded by the Ukrainian side as confirmation of the accuracy of such reports, with all relevant consequences', the ministry warned.
Earlier, we reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that as of now, Ukraine cannot return all its territories. However, the country and will definitely restore control.
And the former commander of the U.S. Army in Europe, General Ben Hodges, stated that to win the war against the Russian Federation. After all, the liberation of the occupied peninsula will be a turning point in the conflict.
Ukraine firmly opposes possible support from Nicaragua for Russian claims to occupied territories and warns of serious consequences for the country if such a course continues.
