Germany Urges Hungary to Reconsider Its Veto on New Russia Sanctions.
Call for Sanctions Review
According to UATV: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called on Hungary to reconsider its decision to block the European Union's 20th sanctions package against Russia. This move has caused concern among European partners, as these sanctions are crucial for maintaining pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine. The EU requires unanimous agreement from all member states to implement such measures.
Hungary recently blocked the adoption of this sanctions package. In a related development, both Hungary and Slovakia have also threatened to halt electricity supplies to Ukraine. In response, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that his country refuses to stop these supplies due to perceived threats to the ethnic Hungarian minority living in Ukraine.
'I am surprised by Hungary's position. We will discuss this with our Hungarian colleagues.' Annalena Baerbock
Baerbock expressed her surprise at Hungary's stance, emphasizing that she does not believe it is right for Hungary to 'betray its own struggle for freedom and European sovereignty.' This situation requires further discussion and cooperation to reach a consensus among European Union member states.
Strained Relations
These events highlight the growing tensions within the European Union, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and opposition to Russian aggression. Hungary, which has its own distinct interests in this matter, risks undermining EU unity in the effort to counter Russia. Future negotiations between member states could significantly influence upcoming decisions on sanctions and aid for Ukraine.
