Toyota has unveiled the electric pickup Hilux: what has changed in the new model.
According to Korrespondent.net: Toyota has officially introduced the ninth generation of its famous pickup truck Hilux, which will feature a fully electric version for the first time in history. According to Carscoops, the new model has received a new design called 'Cyber Sumo', which differs from the traditional 'hammer-like' style of other brand models.
Design and profile features
The dimensions of the pickup remain the same as its predecessor. The front end of the Hilux looks more aggressive: narrow LED headlights, a honeycomb grille, a massive metal underbody protection, and expressive air intakes. In the electric version, the grille is closed, emphasizing the zero-emission nature of the model. Although the silhouette of the vehicle remains familiar — the doors, pillars, and roofline are borrowed from the 2015 model, new wheel arches, wide fenders, and updated rims give the pickup a more powerful appearance. The rear of the vehicle has also undergone changes: new LED taillights and an upgraded bumper with side steps similar to those of the Ford Ranger.

Modern interior and technology
The interior of the Hilux has received a complete modernization. The central part of the panel features a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, while a digital instrument panel of the same size is located in front of the driver. For entry-level trims in Thailand, smaller 8-inch and 7-inch screens are provided. Toyota has retained physical buttons for climate control and audio system management, adding convenience while driving. The steering wheel is borrowed from the Land Cruiser, and a compact driving mode selector and a new gear lever are placed on the central console. The vehicle also received an expanded set of driver assistance systems that meet the standards of the brand's passenger models.
Powertrains and cargo capacity
The pickup will be offered with several engine options: a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel available in regular or mild-hybrid versions, a 2.7-liter gasoline engine, as well as a fully electric modification. The latter features two electric motors with a total output of 193 hp and a 59.2 kWh battery that provides a range of up to 240 km in the WLTP cycle or over 300 km according to the NEDC standard. In the future, by 2028, Toyota plans to release a hydrogen fuel cell version of the Hilux.
The model's payload remains high: up to one ton, with the ability to tow trailers weighing up to 3.5 tons for models with internal combustion engines. The electric version can carry 715 kg of cargo and tow up to 1.6 tons.
Technical specifications and production
The new Hilux is built on an upgraded IMV platform, which has received a reinforced frame, electric power steering, new engine and cab mountings to reduce vibrations, as well as an upgraded suspension. Independent springs remain at the front, while a rigid axle with leaf springs is at the rear. The pickup offers two suspension tuning options — for heavy conditions and towing or for comfortable everyday driving. Four-wheel drive versions are equipped with a rear differential lock and a Multi-Terrain Select system.
Production of the new Hilux is concentrated in Thailand, where the diesel version is already available at a price ranging from $23,700 to $42,200. The electric model is priced at $46,100. In Europe and Australia, the model will go on sale in December 2025, in Asian markets — throughout 2026, and the debut in Japan is expected by mid-2026.
It should be noted that earlier it was reported that Toyota introduced a shortened Hilux Champ.
