Odessa Zoo Director Explains Why a Proposed Relocation Is Currently Impossible.
Proposal to Relocate the Odessa Zoo
According to Novyny.live: Activists in Odessa, Oleksandra Harbar and Anzhelika Karapetian, have suggested moving the city's zoo to Savytskyi Park. They argue the current facility has outdated and inadequate conditions for the animals. However, zoo director Ihor Bielakov has opposed the plan, stating that executing such a complex relocation during wartime is not feasible.
The relocation proposal has sparked lively public debate. Ihor Bielakov noted that the current plan would leave only birds at the existing site, while constructing a new zoo in Savytskyi Park for all other animals. He emphasized that moving a large number of wild animals is an extremely difficult and high-risk undertaking. The director specifically warned that
“attempting to transport our elephant Wendy at her age could be fatal”— Ihor Bielakov.
Financial Issues and Development Threats
The situation at the Odessa Zoo is complicated not only by relocation plans but also by financial troubles. In 2024, the city council allocated approximately 5 million hryvnias for new heating equipment for the zoo. However, law enforcement has since opened a criminal investigation into the alleged embezzlement of funds at the institution. Furthermore, the zoo's land is under threat of commercial development, which adds another layer of difficulty to ensuring proper animal welfare.
Therefore, the question of moving the Odessa Zoo to Savytskyi Park remains unresolved, continuing to cause disputes between activists and the zoo's management. In the context of the ongoing war and the institution's current challenges, finding a solution that ensures animal safety and proper living conditions is critical. Any future plans must also carefully consider the significant financial and legal hurdles that currently exist. Zoos in Ukraine face immense pressure, balancing animal care with survival during a national crisis.
