The Trevi Fountain in Rome will become paid from 2026: what will change for tourists.
According to ТСН: One of the most famous tourist attractions in the world — the Trevi Fountain in Rome — will soon require an entry fee for visitors. The Italian authorities have made this decision to cope with overcrowding and to preserve this architectural masterpiece.
Entry Fee
Starting from February 1, 2026, tourists will have to pay a symbolic fee of 2 euros to get close to the water. This fee will only apply to the lower platform located directly by the fountain bowl. The maximum number of visitors allowed in the paid area at one time will be 400 people. However, enjoying the baroque architecture from the surrounding square will remain free of charge.
Combatting 'Overtourism'
The main goal of the city hall is to combat 'overtourism.' Due to the huge number of tourists overcrowding the square, visitors often cannot fully enjoy the fountain. The introduction of a fee is intended to help regulate tourist flows and improve their experience.
History of the Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain was built in the 18th century by order of Pope Clement XII. It is unique in that it is still fed by the ancient aqueduct Aqua Virgo, which has supplied water to Rome since 19 BC.
This new measure prompts reflection on the impact of tourism on historical monuments and their preservation. The introduction of a fee could be a step toward improving conditions for all visitors, as well as helping to preserve architectural heritage for future generations. This is an important signal for other cities facing similar problems.
