Oil Slicks Off Odesa Coast Have Vanished, but the Sea Has Turned Green: Latest on the Water Crisis.
Marine Pollution Update
According to Novyny.live: Although the visible oil slicks near Odesa in the Black Sea have disappeared, the water has taken on an unusual green hue. On March 12, yellowish patches with a sunflower oil odor were detected, and fat and oil content at the 'Otrada' and 'Lanzheron' beaches reached nearly 49.8 mg/dm³. This contamination may be linked to incidents that occurred in late 2025, sparking concern among environmentalists and local residents.
Current observations show that while the obvious pollution patches are gone, the water's strange green color raises new alarms. Additionally, on March 10, 2026, spots of industrial oils were found in the Dniester River, suggesting broader regional contamination issues. This highlights the urgent need for ongoing water quality monitoring in coastal areas.
Earlier, in late January, a die-off of seahorses of the species Hippocampus guttulatus was recorded, which may also be tied to environmental pollution. These events underscore the critical importance of taking action to improve the ecological situation in the Black Sea and surrounding waters.
Pollution in the Black Sea, especially in areas popular with vacationers, can have severe consequences for local ecosystems and the economy. The disappearance of visible slicks does not mean the problem is solved, as changes in water color may signal the presence of hazardous substances. This calls for a systematic approach to monitoring and protecting marine resources.
