UN Faces Bankruptcy Risk as US Withholds Billions in Dues.
UN Secretary-General Issues Stark Warning
According to Novyny.live: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning that the organization faces potential financial collapse due to the United States withholding its membership dues. The crisis escalated after the US halted its mandatory payments following the start of Donald Trump's second presidential term. As a result, the US owes the UN approximately $1.4 billion for previous years and an additional $767 million for the current year.
Notably, in 2025, the White House has not paid a single cent of its $826 million obligation. While the US pledged $2 billion for humanitarian aid in December, this funding does not cover its core dues to the UN. The organization's budget has already been cut by 7% compared to last year, further straining its finances.
Mounting Financial Strain at the UN
António Guterres has been working to stabilize the UN's finances since 2024, but notes a frustrating paradox where 'the more we save, the more we are punished.' In one stark cost-cutting measure, the UN stopped providing paper towels in the restrooms at its New York headquarters. These actions highlight the severe financial distress the organization is experiencing and underscore the urgent need to resolve the dues payment issue to ensure the UN's operational stability.
The UN's financial health is critically important as it plays a central role in global governance and peacekeeping. The failure of the United States, its largest contributor, to meet its obligations could severely hamper UN programs, potentially impacting international stability and humanitarian efforts worldwide. The Secretary-General's recent warnings point to the necessity of an immediate resolution to this funding crisis to prevent further destabilization of the institution.
