The UN reported how much the population of Ukraine has decreased due to the war.
The population of Ukraine decreased by 10 million people
The population of Ukraine has decreased by 10 million people, which is approximately a quarter of the total, since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia. This situation is due to the outflow of refugees, decrease in birth rates, and deaths during the war. This was stated by the head of the Eastern Europe division of the United Nations Population Fund, Florence Bauer, according to Reuters.
Bauer noted that the invasion that occurred in February 2022 further complicated the already challenging demographic situation.
The birth rate has sharply fallen and is now about one child per woman, which is one of the lowest rates in the world, she noted. To ensure a stable population, the birth rate needs to be 2.1 children per woman.
According to the official, the accurate assessment of the war's impact on Ukraine's population will be conducted after the end of Russian aggression, when a full census can be carried out. She also noted that the direct impact is already felt in regions that are virtually empty, villages where only elderly people remain, and couples who cannot start a family.
The largest part of the decrease in Ukraine's population is attributed to 6.7 million refugees who now reside abroad, mainly in Europe. Military casualties have also affected this situation.
Exact numbers are difficult to state, but estimates suggest the number of victims is in the tens of thousands, she added.
Let us recall, Ukraine ranked first in the world in mortality rate and last in birth rate. This data was published in recent CIA reports on the demographic situation in the world.
It is also forecasted that in the coming years, Ukraine and Russia may face a demographic crisis, as overall more than a million people, including military personnel, have been killed or wounded during the military actions. The exact number of civilian casualties is still unknown.
Earlier, Ella Libanova stated that to maintain Ukraine's population at the level of 30 million people, it is necessary to attract 300,000 migrants annually.
The director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ella Libanova, stated that after the end of the war, the integration of Crimea's residents will be easier than that of Donbas residents.
