Orban seeks to disrupt aid to Ukraine to please Trump, - Politico.
Hungary threatens to block aid to Ukraine, using it as a way to support Donald Trump. This is reported by Politico.
The plan is for Hungary to block a 50 billion euro loan for Ukraine, which was conditioned on frozen Russian assets. If Trump wins the election, he likely will be able to refuse providing part of this loan. This will allow him to show his voters that he is not funding Ukraine.
The publication also notes that in this way Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is preparing to make a political gift to his friend from America - Donald Trump.
Analysts reminded that aid to Ukraine was planned to be provided in the form of a loan covered by unforeseen profit from frozen Russian assets. Most of these assets are located in European countries.
Therefore, the European Union is considering providing aid to Ukraine in the amount of 35 billion euros. Meanwhile, the US insists on extending the loan term to 36 months instead of 6 months as it is now. Analysts believe that Orban does not want to support this US decision and is trying to block the loan.
Ukraine is in great need of this aid, especially before the expected cold winter and dependence on Russian energy supplies.
The EU can provide aid to Ukraine without involving the US. But this will allow the US not to participate in financing.
Orban is criticized within the EU itself but does not seem to give up yet. Nevertheless, the EU will still provide aid to Ukraine, even if Hungary gives in.
According to analysts, Orban's blocking of the loan is an indication of his rapprochement with Trump and shared positions on Ukraine. In this way, Hungary is trying to buy goodwill from its Republican friend.
The decision on providing the loan to Ukraine must be made by the end of October. Then it will be decided whether the US will participate in this financing.
