Orban Issues Ultimatum to Ukraine: Oil Flow for Support.
Hungary’s Stance on Aiding Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that his country will not endorse any initiatives benefiting Ukraine until the transit of Russian oil via the 'Druzhba' pipeline is restored. He claims Ukraine has deliberately halted these oil supplies. This position effectively ties Hungary’s political backing to the resumption of oil flows.
In addition, Hungary has signaled its refusal to approve a 90-billion-euro loan from the European Union intended for Ukraine. This announcement came amid ongoing bilateral talks and follows a recent visit by a Hungarian delegation to Ukraine on March 11, ostensibly to inspect the 'Druzhba' pipeline. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he was unaware of the purpose behind this delegation’s trip.
Viktor Orban: 'Hungary’s position is very straightforward: we are ready to support Ukraine once we receive our oil, which they have blocked. Until then, no decision in favor of Ukraine will receive Hungary’s backing.'
The statement has raised alarm among Ukrainian officials, who had been counting on Hungarian support amid the country’s ongoing crisis.
Economic and Political Challenges
As a result, Hungary’s position on the transit of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory remains uncertain, and the relationship between the two nations is growing increasingly strained amid overlapping economic and political pressures.
The situation regarding the transit of Russian oil through Ukraine is critically important not only for the economies of both countries but also for regional stability. Against the backdrop of a protracted conflict and economic hardship, Hungary’s stance could reshape its ties with the European Union and affect international support for Ukraine. Monitoring these developments is essential to understanding the next moves from both Budapest and Kyiv, as well as potential shifts in EU political dynamics.
