Ukraine Withdraws Older Paper Hryvnia Notes from Circulation.
Changes to Ukraine's Currency Circulation
According to TSN.ua: The National Bank of Ukraine has officially withdrawn a series of older-design paper hryvnia notes from circulation. These banknotes are no longer legal tender for any transactions, including payments on public transport. This move is part of a broader, ongoing effort to modernize the nation's cash supply and enhance security features.
The specific low-denomination notes that can no longer be used are:
- 1 hryvnia
- 2 hryvnia
- 5 hryvnia
- 10 hryvnia
Printing of these notes ceased in different years: the 1-hryvnia note in 2015, the 2-hryvnia in 2014, and the 5- and 10-hryvnia notes in 2018. The policy reflects a global trend where central banks phase out smaller paper denominations, often replacing them with more durable coins.
Exchanging Old Banknotes
Citizens have until February 26, 2027, to exchange their old paper notes for current coins or new-design banknotes. The primary paper hryvnia denominations that remain in circulation as of 2026 are:
- 20 hryvnia
- 50 hryvnia
- 100 hryvnia
- 200 hryvnia
- 500 hryvnia
- 1000 hryvnia
It is therefore crucial for the public to be aware of these changes and take steps to exchange any outdated currency they may hold.
This shift in currency circulation may impact the daily financial transactions of Ukrainians, particularly those accustomed to using smaller denominations for everyday purchases.
Residents must pay close attention to the exchange deadline. After 2027, the opportunity to swap old notes will be closed, potentially resulting in a loss of funds for anyone who fails to act in time.
