At 97, Patriarch Filaret Dies: His Journey Toward an Independent Ukrainian Church.
Patriarch Filaret: A Life and Legacy
According to Novyny.live: Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine passed away on March 20, 2023, at the age of 97. A prominent Orthodox leader, he dedicated his life to championing the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. His contributions to Ukraine's religious landscape are immeasurable, as he stood as a central figure in the establishment of a self-governing church body.
Born Mykhailo Antonovych Denysenko in the village of Blahodatne in the Donetsk region, Filaret entered the Odesa Theological Seminary in 1946 and graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy in 1952. In January 1950, he took monastic vows, adopting the name Filaret, a pivotal step in his spiritual journey.
His church service began with active involvement in religious life. In 1990, he became the Locum Tenens of the Moscow Patriarchal Throne, and a council of bishops endorsed the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This decision laid the groundwork for Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991. In June 1992, the formation of a unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate was announced, and by 1995, Filaret had been elevated to Patriarch of this body.
The Struggle for Independence
Filaret was a fierce advocate for an independent church, a mission that became central to Ukraine's religious identity. In 2018, the Unification Council created the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, marking the culmination of his long fight for the autonomy of Orthodox Christianity in the country.
In his later years, Filaret faced health challenges. He was admitted to a hospital in Kyiv on March 9, 2023, where he remained under medical care. Sadly, on March 20, 2023, Patriarch Filaret died, leaving behind a profound legacy in the development of Ukrainian Orthodoxy.
Throughout his life, Filaret received numerous honors, including state orders:
- Order of Friendship of Peoples
- Order of the Red Banner of Labour
- Order of Freedom
- Cross of Ivan Mazepa
These accolades underscore his impact on Ukraine's religious life and his role in the campaign for an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The death of Patriarch Filaret marks a significant moment not only for Ukraine's religious sphere but also for its socio-political context. His work helped shape an independent church, which has become a symbol of national identity and spiritual sovereignty. His legacy will continue to influence the evolution of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, particularly within the newly formed Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and will be discussed and analyzed in the context of the country's ongoing religious institutional development.
