Doctors Issue Warning After Vitamin D Overdose Leads to Hospitalization.
The Dangers of Vitamin D Toxicity
According to TSN.ua: Medical professionals are raising the alarm about the risks of vitamin D overdose following the hospitalization of a middle-aged man. The patient suffered severe health complications after embarking on an intensive, month-long supplement regimen. This case highlights a growing concern in regions with less sunlight, where people may self-prescribe high doses without medical guidance.
The man's condition deteriorated after he began consuming more than 20 different supplements daily. His intake included approximately 150,000 IU of vitamin D per day, a staggering amount compared to the recommended daily allowance of about 400 IU (10 mcg). His regimen also featured 100 mg of vitamin K2 and elevated doses of other vitamins. Subsequent tests revealed dangerously high levels of vitamin D, excess calcium, and elevated magnesium in his system.
Resulting Acute Kidney Injury
The overdose resulted in a diagnosis of acute kidney injury, necessitating immediate hospitalization. He spent eight days in the hospital. While his overall condition improved, his vitamin D levels remained elevated even two months after treatment concluded. Doctors note that vitamin D toxicity can be long-lasting, as the vitamin has a half-life of approximately two months in the body.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the hazards associated with the unregulated use of dietary supplements. It underscores the vital importance of adhering to recommended vitamin dosages to prevent serious health complications. Physicians specifically urge caution, as excessive supplement consumption can lead to dangerous physiological consequences.
The case also stresses the necessity of consulting healthcare professionals before starting any supplement protocol, particularly one involving high doses.
