Abu Dhabi Talks: Key Issues Remain Unresolved.
Negotiations in Abu Dhabi
According to UATV: During the talks in Abu Dhabi between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia, some agreements were reached, but central contentious issues – particularly territorial questions – remain unresolved. As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced, another round of negotiations could follow as early as next week.
The Ukrainian delegation in Abu Dhabi consisted of the following people:
- Kyrylo Budanov
- Serhij Kyslyzja
- Rustem Umjerov
- Andrij Hnatow
- Wadym Skybyzkyj
- Dawyd Arachamija
The United States was represented in the negotiations by:
- Steve Witkoff
- Jared Kushner
- Dan Driscoll
- Alex Grinkewitsch
- Josh Gruenbaum
Russia was represented by the head of the General Staff Main Administration, Igor Kostyukov.
U.S. officials assessed the talks as a 'significant step forward'. However, experts like Alexey Burjatschenko pointed out that Moscow is 'not actually ready for a constructive negotiating process'. Zelensky also emphasized that 'the American side raised the question of possible formats for setting parameters for ending the war and the necessary security guarantees'.
Background of the Negotiations
In light of these diplomatic efforts, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine on January 24. During this, 375 combat drones and 21 missiles of various types were fired, mainly targeting the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Andrij Sybiga commented on the situation with the words:
'Peace initiatives? A trilateral meeting in the UAE? Diplomacy? For Ukrainians, it was another night of Russian terror.' Andrij Sybiga
This military strike underscores the enormous discrepancy between diplomatic activities and the reality at the front.
In light of these events, the further steps of the negotiating parties and their willingness to compromise remain questionable. A next round of negotiations could bring more clarity here, but at the moment, the key issues remain open. The Abu Dhabi talks mark an important phase in the search for a conflict resolution between Ukraine and Russia, yet their success depends on the willingness of all parties to make real concessions. The simultaneous Russian attack illustrates the complexity of the situation and makes further developments seem uncertain. It remains to be seen whether the parties will find common ground or whether further talks will merely deepen existing divides.
