Dolphins Spotted Off Odesa Coast for First Time in a Year After Overnight Drone Attack.
Dolphins Return
According to Novyny.live: For the first time this year, dolphins have been observed in the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park in the Odesa region. The sighting occurred at dawn following a nighttime drone attack launched from the sea. Ecologist Ivan Rusev confirmed that five dolphins were seen in the water, where they were, in his words,
'hunting schools of fish in the Black Sea.'
War's Toll on Wildlife
The dolphin population has suffered severe losses due to the conflict, with over 80,000 Black Sea cetaceans killed. These figures highlight the serious environmental consequences facing the region. Pollution also worsened after Russian tankers were damaged in the Kerch Strait in December 2024, further harming the natural habitat.
Black Sea Dolphin Species
Three species of cetaceans inhabit the Black Sea: the common bottlenose dolphin, the common dolphin, and the harbor porpoise. The reappearance of dolphins in this area is a hopeful sign for the local ecosystem, as their presence may indicate that the marine environment is beginning to recover. Restoring the dolphin population will likely be a slow process, but each new sighting marks an important step forward.
This sighting in the Tuzly Estuaries underscores the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems that have been severely damaged by military activity and environmental disasters. In the midst of war, when many animal species face heightened threats, such news offers a glimmer of hope for restoring the region's natural balance. Protecting dolphins and other marine life is a critical mission for both conservationists and the state, since a healthy sea is essential not only for wildlife but also for the people who depend on its resources.
