Trump threatens the annexation of Greenland: why Europe remains silent for the sake of Ukraine.
According to ТСН: European leaders are trying to maintain good relations with Donald Trump, as this has become their priority. They are ready for various concessions to engage the unpredictable U.S. president in negotiations regarding Ukraine. However, the situation in Greenland puts this strategy at serious risk.
Uncertainty and complexity of the situation
The importance of U.S. support in countering the Russian aggressor is not questioned. To this end, the EU has already made certain compromises, agreeing to 15% tariffs on its goods. However, now, as the White House threatens regarding Greenland, European leaders have found themselves on a 'tightrope' — between the need to protect Denmark and the fear of offending Trump.
The situation in Paris
At the 'Coalition of the Willing' meeting in Paris, difficulties arose. When journalists asked French President Emmanuel Macron about the reliability of the U.S., he evaded a direct answer, shifting the conversation to Ukraine.
“I have no reason to doubt the sincerity of these commitments [regarding security guarantees — ed.],”Macron noted. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also chose caution, pointing to the 'special relationship' between the U.S. and Britain in the field of intelligence and security.
Lack of condemnation
The leaders of seven countries, including Denmark, issued a joint statement mentioning 'the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,' but without a direct condemnation of U.S. actions. This resembles Europe's reaction to the U.S. attempt to oust Maduro in Venezuela, when many countries chose silence, believing that a conflict with Trump would not contribute to resolving the Ukrainian issue.
Expert opinion
Marcus Zinner, a senior researcher at the German Marshall Fund, describes the situation as a 'double trap.'
“Europeans fear that criticizing Trump could give the U.S. president grounds to conclude a peace deal at the expense of Ukraine and Europe…”the expert explains. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that the annexation of the island could seriously undermine the post-war security system. But the fear of losing Ukraine forces Europeans to be cautious in expressing this.
It is worth noting that Trump expressed a desire to buy Greenland, and the White House is discussing the possibility of paying up to $100,000 to each resident of the island to encourage them to associate with the U.S.
This situation illustrates how the geopolitical ambitions of one world leader can harm complex international relations. Europeans are trying to balance between supporting the United States and protecting their interests while avoiding direct conflict with Trump. Events related to Greenland could have far-reaching consequences for stability in the region.
