Weather significantly affected the apple harvest: prices may rise.
Yield of popular apple varieties decreased due to frosts
The Ukrainian apple market faced new challenges in the 2024 season. Recent frosts caused a decrease in the yield of popular Red Delicious and Golden varieties. This led to the appearance of russeting on the fruits, which automatically classifies them as second-grade fruits.
This was reported by Volodymyr Gurzhiy, head of USPA Fruit.
Overall, the apple harvest in the country turned out to be below average. The biggest losses were recorded in the Vinnytsia region, which is a key apple growing region. Here, volumes decreased by 30% compared to usual indicators, and in some farms, the situation is even worse.
However, the situation is not as pessimistic everywhere. Bukovina and Transcarpathia suffered the least losses, almost maintaining the harvest at the usual level. Some producers even report record harvests in these regions.
Volodymyr Gurzhiy emphasized the importance of a professional approach to gardening. Farms that use modern technologies for crop protection, such as anti-hail nets and special spraying schemes to reduce plant stress, have managed to minimize losses.
