Poland extended the buffer zone on the border with Belarus for another 90 days

The head of Poland's Ministry of Internal Affairs signed a decree extending the buffer zone on the border with Belarus for another 90 days.

"The zone has yielded concrete, good results. It is primarily aimed at smugglers who transport people across the border," said Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, justifying this decision.

The buffer zone covers a section of the Polish-Belarusian border over 60 km long within the territories of border posts in Narewka, Bialowieza, Dubicze Cerkiewne, and Czeremcha.

The ban on staying in a certain territory in the buffer zone has been in effect since June 13, 2024. It came into force after a surge in attempts by migrants to cross the border and a series of violent incidents, one of which resulted in the death of a serviceman.

And the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, recently stated that Minsk will not prevent migrants interested in doing so from entering the EU, implying that this is his response to European sanctions.

In particular, on September 5, it was reported that Polish border guards detained suspects involved in an organized criminal group engaged in organizing illegal migration from Belarus to Poland.
